IMPORTANT NOTICE

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Seven counties in the greater San Francisco area have been ordered to “shelter in place” until May 3,  2020, the entire state of California, with no non-essential services being permitted, so as to slow the spreading of this disease.

This restriction affects all churches in the Bay Area, and Serbian parishes will abide by the guidelines of the authorities.

For this reason, our St. John the Baptist Cathedral will continue serving Divine Liturgies without attendance, or rather reducing it to only a couple of chanters who will maintain a social distance of at least six feet from one another. Please be patient in these times of great challenge, and please pray that this pestilence ends soon. Meanwhile, keep up good faith, watch carefully over your neighbors and friends, especially if help is needed. Pray for your family, your Church and for all people who are affected by this virus. Let us hope that God through the work and prayers of good servants will solve crises as soon as possible.

As America faces this unprecedented global Coronavirus, Covid-19, and committed to providing guidance during this crisis and fulfilling our common duty to ensure the safety of everyone, we are providing this update to our clergy.

Since at this time, our federal, state and local government guidelines and restrictions do not allow us to congregate in larger numbers, and in order for us to do our part in combating this pandemic, the following updated provisions were established for all parishes of the Western American Diocese, effective immediately and until further notice:

·       All parishes must cancel all non-liturgical activities and social functions.

·       For us the Eucharist is an essential parameter of our faith. The Church is conceived as the place where man can get a taste of his eternal destiny, which is communion in God’s very life. The Eucharist as sacrament offers this foretaste. Any distancing from this sacrament is certainly painful for every Orthodox Christian. Thus, beginning this Sunday, March 22, and until further notice, the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated only by the priest and two chanters/readers. Since it is Great Lent, the priest may prepare a second lamb, as we would do for the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts, which then can be used on weekdays in order to give the faithful access to the Life-Creating Mysteries of Christ, and not deprive them from the Sacrament in a troubling time. This must however be done in accordance with the guidelines previously set forth.

·       As in your own personal prayer rule, so also in all services, add special prayers asking God to deliver us from this impending threat of the Coronavirus; that He send His angel to watch over us and protect us, and grant health and recovery to those suffering from this virus. Let us also ask that He bless the ministry of all the clergy, and guide the hands of physicians, nurses and caregivers, and inspire the scientists and researchers in search of a vaccine, who together are laboring to bring healing and relief to those who are suffering from this virus.

·       Parishes who use technology to livestream the divine services must consult with the bishop regarding their proper use and distribution.

·       All measures to ensure the cleaning and sanitizing of all church facilities must continue according to the standards and guidelines of the CDC and your local Health Department.

·       Though we are not permitted to congregate, we must nonetheless embrace this time as an opportunity to do all that we can to increase our care for one another and for our people and the greater community around us.

Let us remind ourselves and our faithful that the Church is that to which we all surrender ourselves in humble obedience. She gives us our name, our identity, and so many blessings, and leads us to God’s Kingdom. The Church, also, tells us when to fast or when not to fast, and we listen and do our best to obey Her instruction. Likewise, when the Church now gives us the instructions set forth here, we listen to Her and do our best to obey Her instructions.

 May our Lord grant that we continue our Lenten journey to Pascha with faith and courage as we make these necessary sacrifices in humble obedience for the physical and spiritual well-being of all.    

ДОПУЊЕНА УПУТСТВА СВЕШТЕНСТВУ И ВЕРНИЦИМА ПОВОДОМ КОРОНА ВИРУСА COVID-19

Док се Америка суочава са до сада невиђеним глобалним корона вирусом, Covid-19, настојећи да обезбедимо смернице у току ове кризе и тако испунимо нашу заједничку дужност да за све наше вернике обезбедимо основну сигурност, издајемо нашем свештенству ова допуњена упутства.

С обзиром да савезне, државне и локалне власти у овом тренутку не дозвољавају окупљања у већем броју, а у циљу нашег доприноса у сузбијања ове пандемије, доносе се следеће допуњене одредбе за све парохије Епархије западноамеричке које ступају на снагу одмах и важиће до даљњег: 

            • Све парохије морају отказати све небогослужбене активности и друштвенe услуге.

            • Св. Евхаристија је за нас суштинско мерило наше вере. Црква се доживљава као место где човек предокушава своје вечно постојање које се остварује у самом животу Божијем. Литургија као Св. Тајна нам нуди овај предокус. Свако удаљавање од ове Св. Тајне је засигурно болно за сваког православног хришћанина. Ипак, од недеље 22. марта 2020. године, Св. Литургију ће служити само свештеник са појцем и помоћником. С обзиром да се налазимо у Часном посту, свештеник може припремити додатни Агнец, као што то чинимо за Литургију Пређеосвећених Дарова, који се може користити за причешће верних у току недеље и тако вернима дати приступ Животворним Тајнама Христовим и не лишавати их Св. Тајне у овим тешким временима. Ово се има извршавати у складу са већ датим хигијенским упутствима.

            • Како у вашем личном молитвеном правилу, тако и у богослужењима, додати посебну молитву Богу да нас избави од присутне опасности од овог вируса и да пошаље свог анђела чувара да бди над нама и да нас штити и да Господ дарује здравље и опоравак оболелима од ове болести. Помолимо се и да Он благослови службу свега свештенства, да управља рукама лекара и медицинског особља, као и да надахне научнике и истраживаче у потрази за вакцином, који сарађују како би донели излечење и олакшање свима који страдају од овог вируса.

            • Парохије које имају технологију за уживо преношење богослужења морају се консултовати са епископом у вези са правилним коришћењем ове опције.

            • Морају се спроводити све мере редовног и санитарног чишћења црквених просторија према упутствима Центра за контролу и спречавање болести (CDC), као и локалних здравствених установа.

            • Иако нам није дозвољено да се сабирамо (на једно место), искористимо ово време као повољну прилику да појачамо нашу бригу једних према другима, према нашем народу и свим људима око нас.

Ово је прилика да се и сами подсетимо да је Црква та којој се увек сви предајемо у смиреној послушности. Она нам даје име, идентитет и изобиље благослова и води нас ка Царству Божијем. Такође, Црква нам говори када да постимо и када да не постимо и ми то пратимо и чинимо све да се придржавамо Њених савета. Исто тако, када нам Црква сада даје наведена упутства, ми слушамо и чинимо све да их се придржавамо.

Док у смиреној послушности подносимо ову неопходну жртву за физичко и духовно добро свих, молимо се Богу да нам подари вере и храбрости како би наставили ово великопосно путовање ка Васкрсу.
