Fourth Sunday after Resurrection

Close to the Sheep's in Jerusalem, there was a pool, which was called the Sheep's Pool. It had round about it five porches, that is, five sets of pillars supporting a domed roof. Under this roof there lay very many sick people with various maladies, awaiting the moving of the water. The first to step in after the troubling of the water was healed immediately of whatever malady he had.

It was there that the paralytic of today's Gospel way lying, tormented by his infirmity of thirty-eight years. When Christ beheld him, He asked him, "Wilt thou be made whole?" And he answered with a quiet and meek voice, "Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool." The Lord said unto him, "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." And straightaway the man was made whole and took up his bed. Walking in the presence of all, he departed rejoicing to his own house. According to the expounders of the Gospels, the Lord Jesus healed this paralytic during the days of the Passover, when He had gone to Jerusalem for the Feast, and dwelt there teaching and working miracles. According to Saint John the Evangelist, this miracle took place on the Sabbath.

INSTEAD OF ‘IT IS TRULY MEET…’ we sing:

The Angel cried to the Lady, full of grace: “Rejoice, O pure Virgin! Again, I say:

‘Rejoice, your Son is risen from His three days in the tomb! With Himself He has

raised all the dead.’” Rejoice, O ye people! Shine, shine, O New Jerusalem! The glory of the Lord has shone on you! Exult now, and be glad, O Zion! Be radiant, O pure Theotokos, in the Resurrection of your Son!

THE READING FROM THE ACTS OF THE SAINTLY APOSTLES (9: 32-42)

In those days it came to pass, as Peter went through all parts of the country, that he also came down to the saints who dwelt in Lydda. There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bed-ridden eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Then he arose immediately. So all who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord. At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord.

THE GOSPEL READING FROM SAINT JOHN (5: 1-15)

At that time there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’” Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

У дане оне догоди се кад Петар обилажаше све, да дође и к светима који живљаху у Лиди. И нађе тамо једног човека по имену Енеју, који већ осам година лежаше на одру, јер беше узет. И рече му Петар: Енеја! Исцељује те Исус Христос, устани и простри сам себи. И одмах уста. И видеше га сви који живљаху у Лиди и у Асарону, и обратише се ка Господу. А у Јопи беше једна ученица по имену Тавита, које значи срна, и она беше пуна добрих дела и милостиње што чињаше. И догоди се у те дане да се она разболе и умре; онда је окупаше и метнуше у горњу собу. А будући да је Лида близу Јопе, онда ученици чувши да је Петар у њој послаше два човека молећи га да не пожали труда доћи до њих. А Петар уставши отиде с њима, и кад дође, изведоше га у горњу собу и скупише се око њега све удовице плачући и показујући сукње и хаљине што је радила Срна док је била с њима. А Петар изгнавши све напоље клече на колена и помоли се Богу, и окренувши се к телу рече: Тавито! Устани. А она отвори очи своје, и видевши Петра седе. Петар пак пруживши јој руку подиже је; и дозвавши свете и удовице показа је живу. И ово се разгласи по свој Јопи, и многи вероваше Господа.

Читање Светог Јеванђеља по Јовану (5, 1-15)

У време оно беше празник јеврејски, и изиђе Исус у Јерусалим. У Јерусалиму, пак, код Овчијих врата има бања, која се зове јеврејски Витезда, и око ње пет покривених тремова, У којима лежаше мноштво болесника, слепих, хромих, сувих, који чекаху да се заљуја вода; Јер анђео Господњи силажаше у одређено време у бању и мућаше воду; и који најпре улажаше пошто се замути вода, оздрављаше, макар каква болест да је на њему. А онде беше један човек који тридесет и осам година беше болестан. Кад виде Исус овог где лежи, и разуме да је већ одавно болестан, рече му: Хоћеш ли да будеш здрав? Одговори Му болесни: Да, Господе; али немам човека да ме спусти у бању кад се замути вода; а док ја дођем други сиђе пре мене. Рече му Исус: Устани, узми одар свој и ходи. И одмах оздрави човек, и узевши одар свој хођаше. А тај дан беше субота. Тада говораху Јевреји ономе што оздрави: Данас је субота и не ваља ти одра носити. А он им одговори: Који ме исцели он ми рече: Узми одар свој и ходи. А они га запиташе: Ко је тај човек који ти рече: Узми одар свој и ходи? А исцељени не знаше ко је; јер се Исус уклони, јер људства много беше на месту. А потом га нађе Исус у цркви и рече му: Ето си здрав, више не греши, да ти не буде горе. А човек отиде и каза Јеврејима да је оно Исус који га исцели.

RESURRECTIONAL TROPARION TONE THREE:

Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad; for the Lord has shown strength with His arm! He has trampled down death by death. He has become the firstborn of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of hell, and has granted the world great mercy!

PARALYTIC KONTAKION TONE THREE:

By Your divine intercession, O Lord, as You raised up the paralytic of old, so raise up my soul, paralized by sins and thoughtless acts; so that being saved, I may sing to You: “Glory to Your power, O Compassionate Christ!”

PASCHAL KONTAKION TONE EIGHT:

You did descend into the tomb, O Immortal. You did destroy the power of death. In victory did you arise, O Christ God, proclaiming, “Rejoice” to the myrrh‐bearing women, granting peace to Your Apostles and bestowing Resurrection on the fallen!
