Communique of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church
The Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church has been closely and carefully following up the daily news and statements of those in charge of the Church, the State, and the medical profession about the increasing spread coronoviral infection that is dangerous to health – and in many cases, to life itself – to life of millions of people.
To all those who fight this plague, especially to physicians and other medical staff, the Holy Synod expresses our deepest gratitude and reverence for the day and night efforts in the prevention and suppression of the epidemic and calls upon them God’s blessing. At the same time, the Holy Synod expresses our condolenceto the families, relatives and friends of victimsof the fatal virus.
By serving to God, the Church has always served for salvation and for every benefit of our faithful as well as of all other people, our neighbors, and especially in these difficult days.
Having respect for the importance and achievements of medicine that is considered to be a great gift of God and a great human endeavor, the Church offers its faithful a unique remedy for immortality, the Holy Communion, as well as the blessing of her holy Sacraments and of her entire sacramental treasury.
The Holy Synod calls upon all the faithful of our Church for responsibility and sobriety in this situation and urges them not to neglect the instructions of the medical services and state authorities and not to neglect or ignore the prescribed preventive measures – in one word, not to endanger themselves or the others. There is no space, however, for panic and rumors.
At the same time, the Holy Synod emphasizes that the Lord is our Hope and our Savior in every distress, and therefore we should multiply our sincere prayers for the sick, and especially for the doctors and other medical staff, who selflessly do all they can, often exposing themselves to the dangers, which is also a form of worship and selfless service to the human race. It is up to us as Christians and human beings to do all that is right for us, believing and knowing from the Holy Scriptures that everything is possible for God, even overcoming natural laws and unnatural processes.
Let us lift up our hearts! May we have trust in our doctors and, above all, in our Lord, the Healer of our souls and our bodies!

Саопштење за јавност Светог Архијерејског Синода
Свети Архијерејски Синод Српске Православне Цркве будно и брижно прати свакодневне вести и изјаве одговорних личности Цркве, државе и медицинске струке о све већем ширењу опасне короновирусне заразе која представља опасност по здравље – а у доста случајева и по сâм живот – милионâ људи.
Свима који се боре против ове пошасти, а у првом реду лекарима и осталом медицинском особљу, Свети Синод изражава најдубљу захвалност и поштовање за даноноћне напоре у предохрани и сузбијању епидемије и на њих призива благослов Божји. Истовремено Свети Синод упућује изразе саучешћа породицама, сродницима и пријатељима досадашњих жртава вируса које је задесио смртни исход.
Црква увек, служећи Богу, служи и спасењу и сваком добру како својих верника тако и свих осталих људи, наших ближњих, а особито у ове тешке дане.
Поштујући значај и достигнућа медицине, које сматра великим Божјим даром и великим људским подвигом, она својим верницима нуди и јединствени лек бесмртности, свето Причешће, као и благодат својих светих Тајни и свог целокупног благодатног дејства.
Свети Синод позива све вернике наше Цркве на одговорност и трезвеност у овој ситуацији и апелује на њих да не пренебрегавају упутства медицинских служби и државних органа и да не запостављају или игноришу прописане превентивне мере – једном речју, да не излажу опасности ни себе ни друге. Нема места, међутим, паници и непровереним гласинама.
Истовремено, Свети Синод наглашава да је Господ наша Нада и наш Избавитељ у свим невољама и да зато треба да умножимо усрдне молитве за оболеле, а нарочито за лекаре и остало медицинско особље, које несебично чини све што може, често излажући и себе опасности, што је такође облик богослужења и несебично служење људском роду. На нама као хришћанима и људским бићима јесте да чинимо све што до нас стоји, верујући и знајући из Светог Писма да је Богу све могуће, па и превазилажење природних закона и неприродних процеса.
Горе имајмо срца! Имајмо поверења у наше лекаре, а пре свега у Господа нашега, Лекара душâ и телâ наших!

Guidelines Regarding Covid-19 for Clergy and Faithful of our Parish
GUIDELINES REGARDING COVID-19
FOR CLERGY AND FAITHFUL OF OUR PARISH

Yesterday, the President of the United States of America has declared, until further notice, a NATIONAL EMERGENCY in the United States of America with regard to COVID-19, which according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is now a pandemic.
COVID-19, referred to as Corona Disease 2019, or simply “Coronavirus”, continues to spread, causing fear and anxiety within society at large and our own communities of faith. Presently in the United States, escalating precautions are being made, as in other parts of the world. Notwithstanding, it is important that our parish communities, clergy and their faithful, practice both faith and discernment in order to maintain the safety of our parishes and those who worship therein. For the Church heals not only with what it says, but what it is—a community of love.
At this time, we are not aware of any confirmed cases of the Coronavirus among the clergy and faithful of our parishes. Nonetheless, we urge you to follow personal hygiene precautions and exercise social distancing measures as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health authorities.
We pray that the Lord will comfort and aid those already affected by the virus, and grant strength and wisdom to those working to combat and control the virus. Our faithful, especially vulnerable individuals, should consult with their parish priest and health professionals, incorporating faith and discernment, including medical science, for appropriate measures.
Since many have questions about the ways of receiving the Eucharistic communion, our hierarchs will address this issue distinctly and update you if there are any changes. Our parish churches and monasteries will remain open for the celebration of Divine Liturgy.
As we believe that the Holy Mysteries of Christ bring only forgiveness, salvation and life—and not illness—let us not tempt the Lord by assuming sicknesses cannot be spread in the space of the church.
We can and must take certain precautionary and common-sense measures, albeit temporarily, to prevent the spread of the virus:
· Anyone, clergy, monastics and laity alike, exhibiting the symptoms of Coronavirus (i.e. fever, cough, shortness of breath, and other symptoms that may be published by medical authorities) should immediately seek medical attention and self-quarantine for the recommended period of fourteen (14) days;
· We recommend that all persons belonging to the vulnerable group (especially elderly, persons with weakened immune system or chronic diseases) stay at their homes.
· Our parish and monastery complexes should be maintained using enhanced sanitization and hygiene protocols as recommended by authorities, which includes increased vigorous custodial cleaning of the entire church facility and the availability of hand sanitizer dispensers at all entrances, in the narthex, common areas, elevators, and so forth;
· Clergy, monastics and faithful, should thoroughly and frequently wash their hands, cover their coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing personal items, especially altar servers when cutting the liturgical bread (antidoron, or naphora);
· Choirs and cantors should also exercise extra precautionary measures, choir members are asked to mark their sanitized music books with their names and take them home with them, so that they do not unintentionally become a vehicle for the transmission of the virus;
· In greeting one another and during concelebrations, faithful are to refrain, at this time, from kissing the hands of celebrants and when asking for blessings;
· Collection plates/baskets are not to be passed, rather put next to the central icon for receiving donations;
· Following the conclusion of Liturgy, the cross is not to be offered for veneration, the faithful should simply make the sign of the cross before the icon, bow their heads respectfully and continue to receive the liturgical bread (antidoron, or naphora) from the hands of the celebrant, who will have, once again, thoroughly washed or sanitized his hands before distributing the bread;
· Regarding any uncertainties, especially in areas where the virus is discovered, your Diocesan Bishop must be notified immediately and consulted for hierarchical blessings to adopt additional temporary measures to prevent the spread of disease at liturgical gatherings; and
· Our communities and organizations should shut down all activities, such as folklore, Church and Serbian school classes and social events (i.e. coffee hours, luncheons, brunches, dinner, meetings, etc.), except for liturgical gatherings, until further notice. It is incumbent upon on church boards to review the federal and state laws, rules and regulations of their jurisdictions and follow them.

УПУТСТВА ЗА СВЕШТЕНСТВО И ВЕРНИКЕ НАШЕ ПАРОХИЈЕ
ПОВОДОМ ВИРУСА COVID-19

Јуче је председник Сједињених Америчких Држава до даљњег прогласио ВАНРЕДНО СТАЊЕ у Сједињеним Америчким Државама поводом вируса COVID-19, а Светска здравствена организација (СЗО) је сада прогласила и пандемију овог вируса.
COVID-19, који се назива корона болест 2019, или једноставно „корона вирус“, и даље се шири, изазивајући страх и узнемиреност у друштву уопште, а и у нашим црквеним заједницама. Тренутно у Сједињеним Државама, као и у другим деловима света, предузимају се све веће мере предострожности. Поред тога, у овом моменту је важно да се сви заједно, наше парохијске заједнице, свештенство и верни народ, потрудимо да сачувамо безбедним наше парохије и све који учествују у богослужењима, имајући веру и користећи здраво расуђивање. Јер Црква исцељује не само оним што проповеда, већ и оним што јесте – заједница љубави.
У овом тренутку није нам познато да је иједан случај корона вируса потврђен међу свештенством и верницима наших парохија. Без обзира на то, позивамо вас да се придржавате мера заштите и личне хигијене и да примењујете мере социјалне дистанце према препорукама Центара за контролу и превенцију болести и локалних здравствених установа.
Молимо се Господу да утеши и помогне онима који су већ погођени вирусом, а да подари снагу и мудрост онима који се боре против овог вируса и раде на његовом контролисању. Ради предузимања одговарајућих мера, наши верници, а посебно они слабог здравља, треба да се консултују са својим свештеником и здравственим радницима, узимајући у обзир и веру, расуђивање и медицинску науку.
Будући да многи имају питања о начинима примања Светог причешћа, наши епископи ће се овом проблематиком посебно позабавити и обавестити нас уколико буде било каквих промена. У парохијским црквама и манастирима ће се несметано наставити са служењем Божанске Литургије.
Иако чврсто верујемо да Свете Тајне Христове могу донети једино опроштај грехова, спасење и живот, а не болест, немојмо да искушавамо Господа претпостављајући да се болест не може пренети и на црквеном простору.
Можемо и морамо привремено предузети одређене мере предострожности и логику здравог разума како би спречили ширење вируса:
• Сви, свештенство, монаштво и лаици који имају симптоме корона вируса (тј. повишену температуру, кашаљ, отежано дисање и друге симптоме који могу бити предочени од здравствених установа) треба одмах да затраже лекарску помоћ и да се изолују за препоручени период од четрнаест (14) дана;
• Свим лицима која спадају у угрожену групу (било због старосне доби, ослабљеног имуног система или хроничне болести) препоручујемо да остану код својих домова.
• Наши парохијски и манастирски поседи треба да се одржавају користећи појачану санитарну заштиту и хигијену како то препоручују надлежни, што укључује појачано чишћење целокупног црквеног објекта и доступност средстава за дезинфекцију руку на свим улазима, у нартексу, заједничким просторијама, лифтовима, итд;
• Свештеници, монаси и верници треба темељно и често да перу руке, да покрију уста и нос при кашљу и кијању и избегавају дељење личних предмета, посебно помоћници у олтару приликом резања нафоре;
• Хорови и појци такође треба да предузму додатне мере предострожности; чланови хора треба да обележе своје нотне књиге и носе их са собом како не би случајно постали средство за пренос вируса;
• При поздрављању, као и за време служби, верници треба да се уздржавају од љубљења руке свештенику, а такође и при тражењу благослова;
• Тас за прикупљање донација не треба износити, већ да остане поред главне иконе;
• По завршетку Литургије, Крст не треба износити на целивање, верници нека учине уобичајени поклон испред иконе, без целивања, и да приђу да приме нафору из руке свештеника, који ће претходно још једном темељно опрати руке;
• У вези са било каквим неизвесностима, посебно у областима у којима је вирус откривен, Епископ мора бити одмах обавештен и консултован ради добијања архијерејског благослова за усвајања додатних привремених мера за спречавање ширења болести на литургијским сабрањима; и
• Осим литургијских сабрања, наше парохијске заједнице и организације треба до даљњег да обуставе све активности везане за фолклор, школу веронауке и српског језика, као и друга догађања попут заједничких ручкова, вечера, састанака итд. Црквени одбори имају дужност да преиспитају савезне и државне законе, правила и прописе својих надлежних установа и да их поштују.

The Feast of St. John the Baptist - Cathedral Slava
On Sunday, October 6, 2019, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Fr. Djurica Gordic, parish Dean, Fr. Zoran Savic from Oakland, Fr. Vasilije Cvijanovic from Moraga and Fr. Eqvtime Kharadze from Georgian parish, together with the parishioners of the St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in San Francisco, California. A beautiful Slava Banquet and program followed.
